Punitive Measures

First Step - Warning. If the player does not appear to be listening, a Storyteller may kick him from the chat to get his attention. The Storyteller must inform the player of the nature of the offense.

Second Step - Loss of experience points. If the character doesn’t have enough experience points to cover the loss, his experience balance will go negative. If the disruption is caused in an Out of Character skin, the punishing Storyteller will choose one of the player’s characters to dock experience from. The punishing Storyteller must inform the player of the nature of his offense and the action taken. The amount of experience docked is determined by the punishing Storyteller, but will not exceed 15 points.

Third Step - Desanctioning. If the disruptions have been caused in an Out of Character skin, the punishing Storyteller will choose one of the player’s characters to desanction. The punishing Storyteller must inform the player of the nature of his offense and the action taken. Characters desanctioned as punitive measures may be resanctioned after a formal, public apology pending consensus by the Storytelling team that the apology is adequate.

Fourth Step - Temporary Ban. Any Storyteller may recommend a player to be temporarily banned if he thinks the transgression serious enough, but only the Administrator can institute such a ban. The banned player will be sent an email or Forum PM explaining the nature of his offense and the action taken if he is not notified of it at the time of punishment. The player will be banned for two weeks. Formal, public apologies after this punishment are welcome and will likely help the player’s case overall; however, they will not negate the temporary ban.

Fifth Step - Permanent Ban. A Storyteller who feels a permanent ban is appropriate must bring the matter up for a hearing in which he, the transgressing player, the Administrator, and at least one other Storyteller is present. The player may request the presence of a given Storyteller by name. The player will be given a chance to discuss what has taken place, and then a vote will be taken regarding the disposition of his case. In the event of a tie, the Administrator carries the deciding vote. Once a majority decision has been made to ban a player, it will not be revoked.

Steps may be repeated or completely skipped depending on the nature of the offense. Minor offenses may simply receive multiple warnings, at least until such offenses begin to become repetitious. Very serious offenses may be met with punishments no higher than Step Four for a first offense-- Step Five will never happen without at least one prior warning.
